We are excited to announce that As-Sabeel Academy seventh grader, Fatima Falah, has been selected as the State Merit Winner for South Carolinain the 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge! Hundreds of entries from talented students all over the country were received, and Fatima was selected as the top entry among all other South Carolina resident submissions.
Fatima’s entry was a prototype for a bullet proof wall that can be installed in classrooms. It’s called STOP – Students and Teachers Offered Protection. Fatima tested different wall materials and discovered that fiberglass is bullet proof and can be made into a wall, which she creatively camouflaged by covering it with a marble sticker and teacher anchor charts and posters. The wall has three panels and can be folded, or in an emergency, locked into place so that students and teachers can hide behind it. Fatima said, “I want to make this project something worldwide that people would know about.”
Before becoming a State Merit Winner, Fatima’s project had already experienced success. Fatima participated in the SC Independent Schools Association State Science Fair in April, and she won first place in the Middle School Invention/Engineering category, and was then selected as the “Best Overall” Middle School Science Fair Project.
Congratulations to Fatima! We are so proud of your achievements!
